Deep Clean vs. Standard Clean: What's the Difference?
Booking a standard clean when your home needs a deep clean is the single most common reason a first cleaning disappoints someone. The cleaner did the job they were hired for; it just was not the job the house needed. Here is how to tell them apart before you book.
The one-sentence difference
A standard clean handles the surfaces you use every day. A deep clean handles everything behind, beneath, inside and above them.
| Task | Standard clean | Deep clean |
|---|---|---|
| Dusting reachable surfaces | Yes | Yes |
| Kitchen counters, sink, stovetop | Yes | Yes |
| Toilets, tubs, showers, mirrors | Yes | Yes |
| Vacuum and mop all floors | Yes | Yes |
| Baseboards and door frames hand-wiped | No | Yes |
| Tile grout and hard-water buildup scrubbed | No | Yes |
| Inside cabinets and refrigerator | No | On request |
| Interior windows and window tracks | No | Yes |
| Vents, ceiling fans, light fixtures | No | Yes |
Time and cost
A deep clean takes roughly half again as long as a standard visit of the same home, and that is exactly why it is priced at about 1.5×. For a 3-bed/2-bath Denver home, that is the difference between roughly $200–$270 and $300–$405. A move-out clean goes further still — every cabinet, closet and appliance interior — and lands around 1.8×.
Which one does your home need?
Book a deep clean if any of these are true
- It has been more than three months since a professional clean
- This is your first time hiring a cleaning company for this home
- You can see buildup in the shower grout or around faucet bases
- There is visible dust on vents, fan blades or the tops of door frames
- You are prepping for a newborn, a house guest, a listing photo, or an inspection
A standard clean is enough if
- You already clean regularly and want the work off your plate
- A professional cleaned the home within the last one to three months
- You are on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly schedule
The strategy most people land on
Start with one deep clean to reset the baseline, then switch to recurring standard visits. You pay the higher rate once instead of forever, and the home never falls far enough behind to need another deep clean. If you go straight to recurring standard visits on a home that has not been cleaned in a year, the first several visits spend their time catching up — you end up paying more for less.
